Join us for a film screening of Hidden Internment: The Art Shibayama Story, a film about the lesser-known history of the Japanese-Latin American internment through the life story of Art Shibayama, who, at 13, was taken from Peru on March 22, 1944, and interned in Crystal City Texas for two years. Despite this internment, Art was denied redress equal to that provided to Japanese Americans.

Renowned Latin American artists, such as Frida Kahlo and Claudio Bravo, all the way to Chicanx artists like Carlos Almaraz and Joey Terrill created astonishing queer imagery hiding in plain sight. Their coded images allowed them to express taboos and same-sex desire in a way that wasn’t punishable. Get ready to see their work as well as art history with completely new eyes. The Elements of Art are the ‘building blocks’ of art. During this session, you will learn how to identify them and become confident in using and applying the ‘language’ or visual ‘vocabulary’ of art.
Join the opening performance with Sisters of the One Drum, followed by aflute blessing with Guillermo Martinez and a land acknowledgment by PUVUUNGNA elder. Immediately following the screening there will be a pre-recorded conversation with Waorani director Obe Nenquimo and then an in-person Q&A with US filmmaker, Keith Heyward.
