En Visión: Picturing the Self

JUN. 11 - SEP. 3, 2017
Online Exhibition

En Visión: Picturing the Self presents photographs that invite viewers to immerse themselves in the vibrant worlds and imaginations of the women who made them. This exhibition features selected pieces from MOLAA’s Permanent Collection in conversation with self-portraits by students of Las Fotos Project, a community-based nonprofit organization that inspires teenage girls through photography, mentorship and self-expression. The artists use photography to document their realities, engage in cultural commentary and express their evolving identities. They highlight their environments and allude to cultural influences to reveal the complexity of being female in contemporary culture. By exaggerating expressions, staging scenes to heighten a feeling, and manipulating their bodies the photographers also comment how beauty norms are imposed on women. While these photos represent distinctive individuals, they become symbols that reflect ....to the viewer.

En Visión was curated by Nalini Elias and organized in collaboration with Las Fotos Project.
