Roberto Sebastián Matta

Roberto Sebastian Matta, born in the capital city of Santiago, studied in Paris in 1937 with the leader of the Surrealist movement, Andre Breton. Although he was already involved in his own exploration of human psychology, Breton welcomed him into the group. Matta became a great influence on the American movement of Abstract Expressionism, when he moved to New York at the onset of World War II. During his stay, American painters such as Robert Motherwell and Jackson Pollock visited his studio to explore the possibilities of automatism, the process of the subconscious to take over the rational mind. In the last few decades, Matta has sought to retain a more logical and scientific structure in his work, creating a union between art and science. Matta’s paintings show the interaction of organic, symbolic, and mechanical forms, illustrating his belief that all forces of the universe are interconnected.

Las pinturas de Matta muestran la interacción entre lo orgánico, lo simbólico y las formas mecánicas ilustrando su creencia de que todas las fuerzas del universo están conectadas.
