ARTIST LISTING

Julio Valdez

Julio Valdez, trained in graphic arts in the Dominican Republic, established himself in New York City in 1993. The geographic relocation from the island to the city evoked a sense of dislocation between his Caribbean past and his urban present. In this work, the human male figure placed in a mystical atmosphere, becomes an “island man” tattooed with symbols of nature, sprouting plants and sea anemones. However, the pale grey and muted color palette suggests a concrete jungle in contrast to the exotic depiction of a green and blue “island” paradise.
