Jacobo Borges

Jacobo Borges is one of the most important artists from the 1970s movement of Neo-figuracíon or New Figure Movement characterized by the use of expressionistic forms and distorted figures. At the beginning of his career, Borges has expressed his opposition to the Venezuelan political situation, representing in his paintings portraits of the upper-class and prostitutes, politicians and military leaders. In the seventies, Borges’ paintings were inspired by old photographs and portraits that he had collected, such as the portrait in this work.

Jacobo Borges es uno de los artistas más importantes del movimiento de neofiguración, caracterizado por el uso de formas expresionistas y figuras distorsionadas. A principio de su carrera Borges se interesó en crear obras que expresaban su descontento con la situación política de Venezuela representando en sus pinturas retratos de personas de clase alta, prostitutas y políticos y militares. En los años setenta, Borges regresó de nuevo a la pintura inspirándose en retratos de viejas fotografías que coleccionaba, sería el caso de esta obra.
