Edgar Negret
Edgar Negret is one of the most important artists associated with the 1950s Latin American trend of Geometric art. In 1948, Negret traveled to New York where he investigated the work of Henry Moore, studied Abstract Expressionism and the sculpture of Alexander Calder. Upon his return to Colombia in 1963, he created a series of sculptures with only three color—white, black and red—thereby associating himself with the minimalist trends of the period. Negret’s work is related to urban constructions, the space era and the sacred. The forms that he pursues are associated with the organic shapes of the natural world, however, the materials he chooses, such as aluminum, are associated with the industrial world.

Edgar Negret es uno de los artistas más importantes de la corriente geométrica latinoamericana comenzada en los años cincuenta. En 1948 Negret viajó a Nueva York en donde se investigó la obra de Henry Moore y se interesó por el expresionismo abstracto y las esculturas de Alexander Calder. A su regreso a Colombia en 1963 Negret comenzó a realizar esculturas utilizando únicamente tres colores: blanco, negro y rojo, asociándose así con las corrientes minimalistas de la época. Las piezas de Negret guardan relación con las construcciones urbanas, la era espacial y lo sagrado. Las formas que consigue se asocian con lo orgánico conectándose de esta forma con la naturaleza. Mientras, los materiales elegidos por el artista, como el aluminio, las acercan al mundo industrial.
